I started more socks, imagine that

So beside our big purchase (see post below), we had a very quite weekend. My husband is on his way to Mammoth for a few days of snowboarding, so that means I have some uninterrupted knitting time.  Last week I started Badcaul socks, with some Cherry  Tree Merino:

It is a fun slip stitch cabled pattern. I am just not really sure if the yarn is working for this pattern. The yarn Anna knit these socks with was pretty bold (seen here), but I am just not sure about these. Is the variegated yarn too much? I really don't know what this yarn would be good for besides basic socks, and I don't want to knit basic socks. I am pretty far on these, and I don't know if I can take ripping them out. So I guess I am asking you to tell me they look ok. Why I am being iffy and sensitive about these socks is beyond me. But seriously should I give up on these, or keep going? Wait maybe I do like them....

Here is another look. They are bold, and slightly stripy. But... I'll stop now.

Last night since I was so torn about the above "not to be mentioned again in this post" socks, I started yet another pair:

Tech Guys Socks, from Feb Magknits. I was so excited to see this pattern posted. I have had two skeins of Louet Gems Opal yarn in my stash to knit my dad socks with. For some reason I was not up for making up a simple pattern, and if you remember I had started these socks more than once. But this pattern was exactly what I was looking for, without having to do any math.

You will notice I am using dpns, shocking I know. but when you want to start socks late at night, you use what you've got. I knit about 5 inches in 2 hours last night, so I know these aren't going to drag on too long. They are soft and cozy, and I hope my dad will love them. I am just so glad they are finally being knit.

Your socks look lovely! I love that pattern, just started a pair myself in some lovely Koigu. Are you doing the cables without a cable needle? I was trying to figure out how to do so.

I think it works well, actually - the texture still shows up in the variegation (although that might just be the work of your killer new camera) and I say keep going!

Hmm, I see what you mean about the CTH socks... I could tell they were textured, but until you pointed it out, I didn't even notice the cables. Knitty had a cool lace pattern in the fall issue called Falling Leaves that I made with Koigu and it worked pretty well - I blogged about them in very early January.

I think the Badcaul socks look great! Keep going. Plus the pattern stretches out when they're on.

I like them, but it seems like a lot of work when the colours just pop right out at you without the need for cables. Having said that, they are fab!

Keep going on Badcaul, its cheerful. :) Take my advice with a grain of salt though, I'm working on sock number two of (my first ever) pair of socks.

I just read your "Sample Socks" post below--after admiring the pictures on this post. It seems you're quite the sock maven!

I've been knitting for about 30 years now, but just attempted my first pair of socks. This weekend I got to the heel flap part, and honestly it just sucks! I'm going to tear out everything and start again. What pattern would you recommend for a first-time sock knitter?

Thanks!

i think they look fab! (but i would say that wouldn't i ;) have you tried putting them on over your toes and see how they look with the pattern stretched out a bit? i think the slipped stitches on the cables just gives a little extra interest to the pattern. but as you know, i'm biased.

love the badcaul in the variegated! I agree that they will likely look much diffrent when stretched out on your foot!

I like the Cherry Tree Hill and I think it works with the pattern. Sure, you could knit them in a plain yarn and you'd see the pattern better, but these are cute and fun. Stick with them. I'm going to make the Tech Guy socks for my hubby. I have some Icelandic Wool that will be perfect, and I'm excited about not having to do any math! Math...not my strong point.

Imagine Jo starting more socks...never!

I'm assuming the pics are taken with the "new purchase"?

Continue with the Badcaul socks! I think that they look great. I just started a pair of these in a bright red koigu mix. The louder, the better, I say :)
