Black Project Revealed

107000286_2703d57a75.jpg

Pattern: Bulky Cable Sweater- Glampyre

Yarn: 7 Skeins Valley Yarns Berkshire Bulky- Webs Brand; Bought at Stitches West.

Needles: Clover Bamboo Circulars 11, 10.5, & 9...

Time:  February 24- 27, 2006.

Modifications: Knit second largest size at a smaller gauge. 3 spi instead of 2.5 spi. Still ended up with a 42 inches sweater. Shortened the sleeves and added one more button hole down the front.

So, this is the first sweater I have completed for myself. Sure there has been a lot of baby and dog sweaters around the misocrafty house, but nothing for me. I picked this because I needed a new black cardigan, and I thick one is what I got. I like it, but man is it one heavy mass of bulky yarn. The pattern called for about 600 yards, I ended up using every last bit of the 756 yds I bought from Webs at Stitches.

The yarn is a 85% wool 15% alpaca single ply blend. Pretty soft, They only thing I don't like about it is it has long hairs that stick out. They are slowly coming off, by me, but are still annoying.  Despite it's flaws, it worked well for this project.

In the picture above the sweater is being held together with bobby pins, as I still haven't bought buttons for it. I think I am going to go with some simple black, since the front of the sweater kinda conceals them anyway. I put the sweater on before blocking and almost ribbed the darn thing out. But after a nice cold bath and some blocking, the sweater is on my good side once again. I know it is going to get a lot of wear, it is cozy and warm.

And now I am ready for my next sweater, this time I think I will stay away from bulky yarn. The super quick knit was almost unsatisfying. I kinda miss my size 1 addis, cause in my heart I think I am a sock knitter.

Joelene - it's a pretty great sweater! I've been admiring that pattern, but I don't do bulky yarns....Is it adaptable, do you think, for a smaller fiber?

It looks great. Very flattering and cute. I need a new black cardigan too, but just can't seem to find the "right" one. I know it'll come along someday.

looks cute! I think I ended up using a lot more yarn than the pattern asked for as well. I guess cause we changed gauge, oops. I hope you find the perfect buttons for it! I wonder why the yarn is so heavy, the alpaca maybe?

That is the fastest sweater ever! I can't believe you finished it so quickly. I know what you mean about the small needles though, even 8's are beginning to feel awkward in my hands lately...

It looks great!!! But I can relate - I know that I am a fine-gauge knitter at heart. I have a tank top that needs armhole and neck finishing that was knit from Fortissima Cotton (a cotton/nylon blend) on size 0 Addis and I loved making it.
