It all happend so fast...

I sat down Friday night, bored with all my knitting projects. So I thought I would swatch some socks I've wanted to knit. I really had no intention of starting them. Then this happened:

I am starting to think you all are getting tired of my sock knitting. I hope not. I do knit other things I promise. I almost didn't blog about these, cause I am starting to feel like a sock machine.

They were a quick knit, what can I say. I really didn't expend any energy to finish them, it just sorta happened.

info

Pattern: Friday Harbor Socks, Knitting on the Road- Nancy Bush

Yarn: 2 skeins Interlacements Toasty Toes, with a lot left over

Needles: #3 Clover dpns

Time: February 10th-12th 2006

Modifications: The pattern called for sport weight yarn, I used Dk. They fit my feet perfect, I think I might have hit gauge anyway, but I was more concerned about how they fit. I of course knit a short row heel instead of the flap. I really had to fuss with the lace pattern the entire time to get everything to line up. I am not sure if it was the chart or my brain on weekend mode.

This is how the colors look outside. I love these socks, super soft and cozy; plus they are pretty. The colors of the yarn worked out perfect! They do look different from the pattern, not as dainty, but that is ok. On Sunday night I couldn't believe I had completed another pair of socks!

Now I have a question, I having only knit socks for myself can't seem to figure out how to size socks for other people. I have been saying I was going to knit socks for my dad since Thanksgiving. I have his measurements, I am just not sure how much negative ease I should calculate into the pattern. I keep starting socks that are exactly the size of his measurement, but I end up ripping them because they are huge. Help a girl out!

i can't believe how fast you knit those! amazing! i'd allow an inch of negative ease for dad socks.

I found on Grumperina's site she mentions negative ease for socks. She states that a 7.5" sock circumference should be about right for a foot that is 9" circumference. That's approximately 17% negative ease. So I would say anywhere between 15-20% should be appropriate. Maybe stick with 15% to be on the safe side? That's the theory I'd go with for circumference. This DIY help page about knitting socks says 10-15% is proper: http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/cda/article_print/0,1983,DIY_14141_3484995_ARTICLE-DETAIL-PRINT,00.html

For length I think you need to stay closer to the actual length with just a tiny bit of negative ease (I think a certain measurement here is more appropriate, like 1/2"). I definitely wouldn't want my socks too LONG!

I hope I didn't tell you way more than you wanted to know. :)

I used to get all fussy about knitting socks for others - how much negative ease? How long? How wide? Running around with a tape measure and everything. Now... I just sort of guess - my grandma's foot is this much wider, and this much longer, so I figure the sock should fit *me* in such and such way, and I go for it! So far, so good!

Oh, and those socks are absolutely fabulous!! Great colors!

Wow, your speed must be set on turbo knit! Great socks! Not too sure about the negative ease thing. When I did socks for my bf and my dad, I just use the gauge I would use for myself and then adjust the number of stitches accordingly. I have no idea if that makes sense to you but it worked for me.

Great socks, and wow, you're really whipping those socks out lately. I defer to Grumperina on the sock fitting issue - although the negative ease is good to keep in the back of my mind.

I can only dream of knitting something that fast. Wow! And I agree with Stephanie - ask the all knowing Grumperina about knitting socks that fit.

Those socks are STUNNING! How could I become bored looking at gorgeous socks like that? You've just added that pattern to my "I want to knit it" list - thanks!

If you have access to IK's subscriber only content, there is a formula in the "Priscilla's Dream Socks" pattern for knitting perfect socks for everyone.

Jo, you are faster than my future mother-in-law at knitting socks, which, means you must be setting some kind of world record because believe me, this woman knits at a speed unknown to man! And I love seeing all your new creations, even if they are mostly of the sock species!
