Stupid Stupid Stupid

Here I was thinking I was special, I had knit my first full size sock in lace and it fit. But oh how the mighty have fallen. I sat down this weekend and cast on for the second sock. I finished the short row toe and was ready to move on to the lace, which I have memorized from the first sock. I was reading the pattern to make sure I was on the right track and bam, I realized I had knit the entire first sock wrong.

First Sock: (wrong)

Second Sock: (right)

For some reason when I knit the first sock I didn't realize that you knit a round in between the lace rounds. Stupid. Now thinking back to anything lacey I have knit I realize this to be true, you always knit or purl a row in between "lace" rows. Duh. I only wish I would have realized before I knit the ENTIRE sock. Now I am thinking about all the time I wasted knitting all that lace, I only needed to knit half of those lace rows. What is funny birch is almost the same pattern, and I have been knitting that up fine, I am a third of the way through.  Partly I guess becasue it is knit flat and not in the round.

What is left for me to do now? Frog I guess. I can't live with a sock I know I knit wrong. Plus the pattern looks so much better doing it the right way. Well I guess I can just call this a learning experience. It is still crappy though. Maybe since I have only done a few rows of lace on the second sock I can knit both sock together on the same needle like Angela. or maybe I should just put these aside...  until I cool off.

Live and learn, Jo, that's all I have to say. Do you want me to send FroggerBee over? No worries about the sock, it all happens to us (I have to frog TWO socks, remember?) Give the sock a break if you're tired of it. Then you can get cracking on your Christmas knitting.

Such. A. Bummer. I feel very sorry for you right now and can empathize with your frustration. I think that's why I've stayed away from working with "lace"! But good for you for trying.

What are you going to do about the Birch project? Take that all out too?

heh--i think i would just knit the second sock wrong too, and then make a whole new pair in the "right" pattern. they BOTH look cool to me! still--i feel bad for you screwing that up. i have been trying to make the same lace pillowcases for months, and i have frogged them four times. the lace--she is a tricky beast!

I say cast on for both on one needle or do the second sock wrong :) Take a break and work through some gifts and a bit more of birch and then come back to the elfines.

personally, as it fits so well... knit the second sock wrong - who will tell? it is still v. pretty. Then treat yourself to some more sock yarn and do it 'right'. You may have 'unvented' a great new pattern.

Hey that explains why they looked a bit different from mine! I thought maybe it was just the colour or something to do with tension...
Personally I'd be knitting sock 2 with your own special lace pattern too- after all, who's ever going to know (aside from you and all your blog readers!)

The lace pattern on the first sock was really interesting.. I think you could totally do both that way.

I did that on one of Honor's mittens. Thinking I had the pattern memorized, I forgot to knit a row in between every thumb decrease row. ARGH. Just set it aside, and you can get to it next year. :)

oops, I meant increase, not decrease.

Darn. I think the lace on the first sock is pretty, but I'd rip it out too. There's just something about knowing that you did it wrong that would bug me. Although, you just have invented a pretty new sock pattern.

Haha bummer. Take a breath and step away from the knitting!
